BASF is bringing biomass-balanced plastic additives onto the market for the first time
BASF today announced the launch of an industry-first range of biomass-balanced plastic additives. The first product solutions, including Irganox 1010 BMBcert and Irganox 1076 FD BMBcert, are certified by TÜV Nord according to ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification). These novel solutions promote the use of renewable raw materials and help BASF customers achieve their sustainability goals.
The BMBcert product range contributes to saving fossil raw materials. At the beginning of the value chain, ISCC-certified, sustainably produced bio-based raw materials replace fossil raw materials. The corresponding quantity is allocated to the product using the mass balance approach. This allocation reduces the CO2 footprint of the BMBcert product (cradle-to-gate) by up to 60% compared to the average global CO2 footprint of conventionally produced products.
These certified additive solutions therefore contribute to sustainable development by helping to save fossil resources, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote the use of renewable raw materials. The industry-first product solution enables customers to differentiate themselves from the competition and helps them achieve their sustainability goals without compromising performance and quality.
Irganox 1010 BMBcert and Irganox 1076 FD BMBcert are suitable for direct replacement of Irganox 1010 and Irganox 1076. The BMBcert products are identical to the conventional variants in terms of performance, quality, product responsibility and regulatory aspects. As a result, the customer neither has to requalify these additive solutions nor reformulate their products.
“By leveraging BASF's highly integrated global production network, which consists of interconnected sites and facilities, we are able to produce these industry-first drop-in solutions with a reduced carbon footprint but equal performance characteristics, ” said Joerg Bentlage, Head of Global Product Management, Plastic Additives, BASF. “On our path to a circular economy, we want to drive a sustainable change towards renewable raw materials in the industries we supply through innovative and strategic customer partnerships.”
Irganox 1010 BMBcert and Irganox 1076 FD BMBcert will initially be manufactured at BASF's production site in Kaisten, Switzerland. Irganox 1010 FF BMBcert and Irganox 1076 FD BMBcert will also be available in McIntosh, USA in spring 2024.
BASF is the world's leading innovative partner for plastic additives and focuses on aligning with its customers' sustainability goals. BMBcert additives are part of the VALERAS portfolio for creating new values for plastics. BASF will continue to drive sustainable innovations in the plastic additives industry by addressing transformation issues such as climate change.
ISCC PLUS is an international certification program that ensures the supply chain and traceability along the value chain from raw materials to the end product.
