Uniper awards Worley front end engineering design for low carbon power project

Worley is one of two companies delivering front end engineering design (FEED) for Uniper on the potential development of a new combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station with carbon capture technology at their existing Connah’s Quay site in the North-East of Wales, UK. 

Once operational, the new power station would generate low carbon power to help meet the growing need for electricity, supporting the UK’s commitment to decarbonizing the UK electricity system by 2035. 

In December 2024, works began to complete FEED for the project. The initial FEED is expected to take around a year to complete. As part of this, we’ll also be designing and submitting development plans for the follow on engineering, procurement and construction execution of the project. 

The new power station is expected to be able to provide around 1.1GW (up to a maximum of 1.38GW) of low carbon power. Developed in two phases with an initial capacity of around 550MW, the first phase would be able to supply enough low carbon electricity to power up to 1.4 million homes each year. 

“The proposed Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power project would enable us to continue to reliably and efficiently generate electricity when it is needed, contributing to future security of supply as well as contributing to economic growth in the region. The award of the FEED contract competition represents a significant step and will result in one contractor being selected for EPC to build the plant.” said Helen Rogers, Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power Project Manager for Uniper.
