Wärtsilä introduces CO2 liquefaction solution
Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a part of technology group Wärtsilä, introduces The Wärtsilä Gas Solutions Puregas BC, for purifying and liquefying the carbon dioxide captured from biogas upgrading plants, enabling a robust, energy efficient, carbon negative and profitable process for plant owners.
Traditional biogas upgrading plants have been based on “catch and release” of the carbon dioxide. Instead of releasing the carbon dioxide to atmosphere, Puregas BC utilises the best available technologies for purifying and liquefying carbon dioxide. The solution turns biogas, an already circular, zero carbon footprint fuel, into a carbon negative solution. With Wärtsilä Gas Solutions Puregas CA biogas upgrading system, the Puregas BC solution eliminates the already minimal (less than 0.1%) methane emissions, as any methane slip can be routed back to the upgrader.
In addition to the environmental benefits, the solution also offers a new commercially profitable revenue stream for the plant owner, as the captured carbon dioxide is purified to food and beverage grade, and/or storage grade. Upcoming regulations for e-fuels production is requiring bio CO2 as feedstock, making the Puregas BC solution an ideal fit.
“The world is facing a climate crisis that calls for not only neutralising but taking a step further and reversing the impact of carbon emissions. The Puregas BC is a product that can deliver this and move from a carbon neutral to a carbon negative impact. The solution is designed to support our customers to reach their decarbonisation commitments. On top of this, the product also offers a commercial benefit,” says Magnus Folkelid, Sales Manager, Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, Biogas.”
The solution comes in a containerised plant with no additional buildings needed. It is designed for full integration with Wärtsilä Gas Solutions Puregas CA systems. It is also suitable for retrofitting and/or integrating with other biogas upgrading processes.
