World’s first liquefied hydrogen tanker arrives in Australia to test export to Japan
The arrival of the Suiso Frontier, the world’s first liquefied hydrogen carrier, in Victoria, Australia today, has marked the success of the Hydrogen Energy Supply Chain (HESC) Pilot Project. The shipment will leave Victoria and unload in Japan, where hydrogen is set to play an integral role in achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
The pilot project, which uses Latrobe Valley coal to produce hydrogen, will apply carbon capture and storage (CCS) during the commercial phase to capture and permanently store emissions from the process. Captured CO2 will be stored at the nearby CarbonNet Project. In a commercial phase, the project will create as many as 30,000 full-time jobs across the Gippsland and Mornington Peninsula regions over the life of the project.
Commending the project as putting “…Australia at the forefront of the global energy transition to lower emissions through clean hydrogen”, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced $7.5 million to support the next pre-commercialisation phase of HESC and $20 million for the next stage of CarbonNet. Funding is contingent on additional commitments from the Victorian and Japanese Governments, and the HESC business partners.
