Howden exceeds its carbon emission reduction targets
Howden has released an update on its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) progress, which includes a 23% reduction in its scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions during 2022.
In early 2022, Howden established its short and longer term ESG targets, including becoming Carbon Net Zero by 2035. Through the recently released ESG Review, the company reflected on its 2022 achievements. In 2022, Howden surpassed its environmental targets including reductions in both waste to landfill and water consumption and very notably, the company reduced its scope 1 & 2 carbon emissions by 23% versus its 2022 target of 11%. In 2021, 12% of Howden’s operations were currently zero-landfill sites and by introducing a locally led waste management programme, the company increased this number to 28% in 2022. In addition, although the company is not a heavy mains water user, Howden also achieved a 7% reduction in water usage across the global business in 2022 compared to its 4% target.
Howden’s most significant positive environmental impact, however, comes through its work with customers where the company supports the reduction of emissions through the development and supply of air and gas handling solutions, many of which support the energy transition and the decarbonisation efforts of its customers. Examples of these contributions are outlined in the review including in the areas of renewable hydrogen, energy recovery and carbon capture.
"Throughout our history, our products, expertise and applications knowledge have been used to support our customers in achieving their environmental, efficiency and safety requirements. Sustainability is deeply rooted in our purpose as a team. The publishing of our review underscores our commitments to the environment and to society. Over the past year, Howden has made considerable progress relative to our ESG objectives and I’m pleased to be officially communicating our progress. Our products and services play a vital role in helping companies avoid emissions, increase efficiencies, and transition to renewable energies. Our extensive product portfolio, alongside our deep expertise in air and gas handling, means that our approach is relevant to a broad range of industries. Climate change continues to be one of the greatest challenges facing the world today and Howden has demonstrated it's committed to achieving carbon net zero and to supporting customers in achieving their carbon footprint reduction and sustainability objectives" Ross B. Shuster, Chief Executive Officer of Howden
Howden tracked progress on its ESG journey against SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards Board) and, where possible, against the TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures) frameworks. Howden also provided information through the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) during 2022. Howden’s 2022 ESG review and results can be accessed on Howden’s ESG webpage.
