Petrofac supports Finnish carbon capture project
Petrofac's consulting team in Woking, UK, is providing engineering support to Vantaa Energy, a Finnish urban energy company, on a project that seeks to capture and store carbon dioxide (CO2) from its waste-to-energy plants.
Vantaa Energy recently announced that its plans for the project have taken a step forward, with the commencement of environmental impact assessment, zoning, permitting, commercial negotiations and partner procurement phases.
Petrofac delivered concept engineering for the project in 2023, engaging with seven potential storage service providers, onshore and offshore, to help Vantaa Energy identify the optimum solution. Our team will continue its support by performing engineering to support Vantaa Energy’s environmental impact assessment on its preferred concept, helping progress the project towards final investment decision, expected in 2027.
Vantaa Energy’s waste-to-energy facilities incinerate non-recyclable waste to produce heat used to produce electricity or heating for homes and offices. Though the emissions and environmental impacts of this process are lower than sending non-recyclable waste to landfills, the incineration process emits CO2. By capturing and eventually storing the CO2, Vantaa Energy will be a step closer to achieving an almost emissions-free way to treat non-recyclable waste.
John Pearson, Chief Operating Officer, Asset Solutions & Energy Transition Projects, Petrofac, said: “We are proud to share our growing expertise in the early engineering phases of carbon capture, transport, and storage projects across hard-to-abate sectors in support of Vantaa Energy’s decarbonisation ambitions. Projects like this reflect our continued commitment and growing role in helping our clients reduce emissions in their operations and to deploy schemes to remove carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere.”
