AFRY drives innovation with new waste-to-energy facility near Prague
AFRY has started the design of a cutting-edge waste-to-energy facility to be constructed by CEZ Group near the town of Mělník in the central Czech Republic.
AFRY entered an agreement with Czech Republic’s largest Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor, Metrostav DIZ, in March this year to design the electrical and I&C systems (instrumentation and control) of the new facility. This innovative project is set to transform municipal waste into heat for Prague, which lies about 30 km south of Mělník.
The new waste-to-energy facility will be constructed within the existing Mělník power plant complex, with operations planned to begin in 2027. Designed to process 320,000 tons of waste annually, the new plant will utilise non-recyclable municipal waste as fuel, addressing upcoming legislative bans on waste landfilling from 2030. This facility is integral to the country’s strategy to transition from coal to low-emission and emission-free energy sources.
“AFRY's role in this project involves the electrical and I&C design aspects. We provide basic design documentation, detail design, and designer supervision of contractor during the construction phase. We are delighted to contribute our expertise to this project, advancing the country's progress towards a more sustainable future” says Petr Šlemr, Head of Energy in Czech Republic.
By reducing overall municipal waste volume and transforming it into energy, this facility will contribute significantly to meeting energy demands while enhancing environmental sustainability.
With extensive experience in the energy sector, both globally and domestically, AFRY stands as a key player in this transformative project. AFRY’s specialists will provide comprehensive engineering, design, and consulting services, furthering the transition to low-carbon energy while ensuring energy security.
